![]() ![]() Kraftwerk's Mensch-Maschine is an attempt to reinterpret the visions of pre-war modernists with this extended historical knowledge. Since World War II, Kracauer's concept of mechanization extends to a far wider range of technologies, both analog and digital. ![]() In addition, Siegfried Kracauer's observations on modernism clarify the band's interest in technology as it affects both society and the individual. This temporal frame allows Kraftwerk to reveal the full range of utopian and dystopian potentials in technological progress. Looking at the band's aesthetic choices in music videos and album art, I identify a nostalgic reinscription of pre-war modernism from a post-war vantage point. Along with its German-language vocals, the band's innovations in these areas set it apart from other German bands of the time. This paper investigates the technological methods and motifs that Kraftwerk contributed to electronic music. ![]()
